Cumin seed is a powerful spice, delicate to tame, but used wisely, it reveals flavors like no other spice. Cumin comes in the form of small, elongated seeds with striated lengthwise, but it is more often seen already reduced to a fine khaki-colored powder. Originally from the Mediterranean and Iran, cumin is now grown all over the world, particularly in India, which is the leading consumer.
Cumin seed contains essential oils with an intense fragrance. The aroma is powerful, almost animal, smoky, and reminiscent of warm earth. Slightly acrid and bitter, cumin brings its character to a dish.
We offer Cumin from an Indian producer in our shop in whole or freshly ground seeds.
If we all know the great classic of 'carrots with cumin', we prefer it in a chili con carne where it works wonders with the smoked paprika. Its character goes well with a strong and flavorful cuisine, on grilled or stewed red meats, lamb, or stuffed tomatoes in summer. Cumin is a must in the Tex-Mex cuisine, chili con carne and tacos where it works wonders with smoked paprika.
To give it roundness and deliciousness, we combine it with coriander seed. To accentuate its smoky notes, the smoked paprika is its ally. And for a fresher and woodier touch, we combine cumin seeds with fennel seeds.
